One protester has been killed as thousands of Nigerians have demonstrated against the removal of a fuel subsidy, which has led petrol prices and transport fares to double. Officials say the man was killed by "mob action" in Kwara state, while witnesses say he was shot by police as they tried to disperse protesters.

There are reports that petrol prices have tripled in some remote areas, while commuters have complained that motorcycle and minibus taxi fares have already doubled or tripled, leaving many people stranded in Lagos as they cannot afford to get back home.
Not only that, many Nigerians expect the prices of other goods to rise as well.
The government has said it will spend the money saved by removing the subsidy on improving the country's erratic electricity supply, as well as health and education. However, analysts say that many Nigerians have little faith that the money will be well spent on the citizens of Nigeria and fear it will instead be stolen by corrupt officials.
In December, the government released a list of the people who benefit most from the subsidy, which include some of Nigeria's richest people - the owners of fuel-importing firms. Years of mismanagement and corruption mean Nigeria does not have the capacity to refine oil into petrol and other fuels.
Several previous governments have tried to remove the subsidy but have backed down in the face of widespread public protests and reduced it instead.
The IMF has long urged Nigeria's government to remove the subsidy, which costs a reported $8bn (£5.2bn) a year.

As most of you already know by now, CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL will be having their INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING DAY this SATURDAY (30APR2011) from 9am - 12pm. They are conducting a FOOD DRIVE to collect packeted and canned food to donate to the relief fund in Japan. If you want to donate, please pass your donations to either Int. Hanna Haizal (4SA) or Int. Ghythri Sivanasan (5SC) by this FRIDAY (29APR2011).
Examples of what you can donate: sugar, salt, tuna, condensed milk, baked beans, etc. It's up to you! :)
Attention to the nominees for the Board of Directors for 2011/2012, here are your assignments set by each respective Board of Director, as promised.

ICSA's annual International Understanding Cookout commenced today, and photos are as follows.
For those of you who didn't participate/could not attend, the objective of this project is to widen the knowledge about other cultures as well as their cuisines. This project was held in the Bilik Masakan and hosted 5 groups, each with a different country to work with. Each group was given the freedom to interpret their theme however they wanted to.

The Board Of Directors for the year of 2010/2011 have agreed to set their assignments by this week, so the assignments for the respective post you're running for will be up on the blog by the end of this week, God willing.
I'm really, really very sorry for the lack of updates, guys. And welcome to the new Interact probationers! You have made a wise choice by choosing Interact to join this year :-)
In the past few meetings, we have discussed a few things, among which are that this year there will be a new system, in which Interactors will be paired off by the Board Of Directors and will be sorted out into the 4 different avenues; Finance, Community Service, Club Service and International Understanding (kind of like when wizards and witches get sorted out into different houses in Harry Potter :-P). These pairs have been given the projects under their respective avenue and will have to plan the said projects together, but they will be guided by the respective Board Of Director. The list is on the Interact Club board (if you still don't know where it is, it's near the 2 pay phones near the Koperasi).
A reminder to current Interactors & probationers as well: please bring a notebook & pen with you at all times during meetings. We don't like explaining things many times over during meetings and having people come up to us a few days later to ask about something we have mentioned during said meetings. Also a reminder from our Club Service Director, Int. Thabeena, please wear your Interact badges and for the probies, please wear your probie badge. The probie badge basically looks a little bit like this:
That is basically what it should look like. But bear in mind, it should only be the ICSA colours: blue, silver & black. Be creative! Use glitter! Project points will be awarded for creativityyyyy! :-) And don't forget to wear this badge AT ALL TIMES. Even when there isn't any Interact meeting. Ah, I should also add that the adjective that you choose should describe what you are in one word. Again, be creative! (But don't use words like sexy, hot, etc. That would just be awkward for everyone...)
And as you all may know, the Interact Coordinating Committee (ICC) of 2011 has already begun planning & preparations for our annual ICC Concert! You may find out more on this event by clicking here.
If you've got talent and are interested to perform for ICC Concert, don't be afraid to approach any of the Board Of Directors, and we shall steer you to the right path :-)
Aaaand finally, mark your calendars, Interactors, as there will be an IU Dance Workshop on the 28th of January 2011 in the school hall, from 2.30 - 4.30 pm. But don't forget that the 1st commandment states that thou shall be punctual, so coming a little earlier won't hurt! For the current Interactors, please wear your Interact shirt and school track pants, and for those who don't have it, you may wear the school shirt and school track pants. Please abide by the school rules, yeah, we are still in school, so no wearing yoga pants or of the sort ok!
